Installing the system

Visit our ground source heat pump system at Mount Wellington Mine

Mount Wellington Mine in Chacewater, Cornwall, has a long history. It started as a small tin mining operation in the 1920s and became one of the most advanced mines in the world by the 1970s. After closing in 1991, the site sat empty until it was given a new lease of life as a Renewable Energy Park.

Today, it’s home to Kensa, the UK's leading provider of ground source heat pumps. Our factory on-site is where we design and manufacture all of our products, right here in Cornwall.

We’re also using the mine’s flooded shafts to power our own ground source heat pump system that heats and cools the buildings we work in.

What’s happening on-site:

  • We use six ground source heat pumps - three heat our offices and factory, and three heat and cool our manufacturing facility.
  • The system draws energy from the water in the old mine shafts - a great example of how to reuse existing natural resources.
  • Kensa’s carbon savings on-site are now set to be somewhere in the region of 33.5 tonnes per year with further carbon savings from increased heat pump sales, equivalent to taking 60,000 cars off the road.

Why Visit?

If you’re thinking about installing a heat pump at home or for a business, visiting our site is a great way to see how it works in real life. You can:

  • Explore how the system was set up and how it performs.
  • Learn more about the practical side - costs, maintenance, and daily use.
  • Ask our team any questions you might have.

We’ve been living and working with this system for years, and we’re always happy to share our experience.

Want to come and see it for yourself?
