Daikin air source heat pump in a 1965 - 1982 property

Malcolm

About me
I have incorporated several thermal hot water systems since the 1970's. A electric solar system was installed in 2012, electric car purchased in 2020 and solar battery in 2023. The heat pump installed in 2024 completed decarbonisation of the property - incorporating a single source of energy - electricity. I have always been sensitive to energy costs and global warming. The government grant of £7500 was an opportunity to economically replace a leaking and failing gas boiler. The issue also provided an upgrade the existing central heating system. I am delighted to share my experience with others.

Air source heat pump

Installing the system

This was slightly complicated due to incorporating the solar thermal system. However the work was well coordinated with Octopus engineers in marrying the two systems. Both perform well together and the heat pump is used very little from April to October for hot water. The installation took about 3 days. The engineers were very efficient with good knowledge of the product.

Living with a heat pump

With solar electric (with battery storage), thermal hot water system and wood burner, energy costs are all but negligible. Hot water heated by heat pump is slightly cooler than gas boiler, but comfortable. The pump is normally very quiet when running, but the system will drive the pump harder under severe weather conditions, thus noise will increase slightly. Having discontinued the gas supply I have noticed no increase in running costs - accounting for recent energy price increases there may be a potential reduction in energy costs. It is essential to run central heating continuous (at a lower temperature in time of low demand). The system is not designed for on / off over long periods of time.
