Kensa ground source heat pump in a post 2003 property

Julian

My wife and I are retired, I used to work as a Rural Chartered Surveyor. Because we were actively involved with choosing the system and project managed its installation I feel we have acquired some useful knowledge which we would like to pass on. With a diminishing income in real terms it seemed sensible to invest capital to reduce our future energy costs.

Installing the system

Our house is a new self build 4 bed house built in 2023.  Timber framed and clad in rendered clockwork.  Our ground source heat pump is connected to two boreholes each about 100M deep.  We have 14 solar panels on the roof and a 10 Kwh battery.  The heat pump provides hot water and heat to the wet underfloor heating system.  Currently our total annual mains electricity bill (for everything) is running at around £850.  We also have a ventilation and heat recovery system and a small wood burning stove in the sitting area.

Living with a heat pump

We hardly notice the pump when it is running it is a quiet low hum a bit like a fridge.  The only adjustment we have made since installation is to increase the return temperature from 35 to 40 degrees which helps with the speed of the initial warm up once the thermostats call for heat.  The heating in the bedrooms upstairs seldom comes on so we have installed a time switch on the bathroom underfloor heating circuits which effectively overrides the thermostats.  I am not sure what I was expecting as I have never had a heat pump before but I am certainly pleased with the result.
