Aira air source heat pump in a 1965 - 1982 property

David

Just myself and my wife in the house. Happy we moved to an air source heat pump and reduced our carbon footprint significantly. Think we are saving a bit of money too. We also have solar panels (all electricity sent directly to the national grid) so feel we have done pretty well by the planet.

Cost of energy bills per year: Hard to tell. March was cold. May (so far) has been warm so no heating. First 9 days of May cost £17, so extrapolation forward for for months likely to cost us £230 for the summer when no heating needed. Assume December through March are all about the same as this March then the four winter months should cost £660. Remaining four months somewhere in between, depending on how warm or cold it is.

Installing the system

Had the pump installed in February 2025. Installation took a week with three people working most of the time. Aira removed the old gas boiler and installed the new hot water tank and other equipment in the two small outhouses just outside the back door. Had three new radiators; two upgraded from type 21 to type 22 and the third (see picture) an aluminium large radiator to cover the heat requirements of the large kitchen/diner area.

Living with a heat pump

Set the temperature to 20C and during the winter months it hardly moved a fraction of an degree. We have turned off the radiator in our bedroom as it was too warm but otherwise left all radiators on full. Pump kicks in when it needs and keeps the water to the standard 55C setting. Hot enough for morning showers and never had an issue with running out of hot water even when guests staying. Use the app to adjust some settings early on and turned radiator temp down to 19C at beginning of Spring. App tells me my energy efficiency (I think this is the COP) is 5.1 for heating and 2.8 for hot water. Moved to the Octopus Aira tariff as soon as we could. Only two full months of bills so far --- March £165 and April £78.
