Aira air source heat pump in a 1945 - 1964 property

Grazyna

We always wanted to make our house as energy efficient and low carbon as possible. There is so much negative press about heat pump, so I feel it needs to be balanced with positive experiences.

Installing the system

Our semi detached concrete house has a good insulation and an EPC rating of C, so were in no daubt a heat pump will work fine and potentially reduce our bills.
We had to upgrade every radiator and add an additional 3 radiators. Fortunately the existing pipes were the right size (15mm), so we only needed to add extra piping for the new rads. The installers managed to fit a new hot water tank in our airing cupboard where the gas boiler used to be. We went for the smallest size as we never run hot water for longer than 15min a go. The installation took 5 days and everything worked smoothly afterwards.

Living with a heat pump

Even during the coldest days of winter we were warm. The only hiccup was on the coldest week of the first winter, the system overheated the house to 22°C. But the Aira team adjusted some settings remotely and now it never goes above the set temperature. In Jan our SCOP was 4.0, in Feb 4.4 for heating. Lower for hot water: 3.2 on avarage.
We never run out of hot water, so the smallest tank is more than enough for a small household.
The overall bills didn't increase. I would say they were either the same as before on the coldest months and lower when it got warmer.  I expect savings over the whole year. We no longer have gas, which took a month for our energy provider to disconnect, so in hindsight I should have booked a gas meter removal as soon as we secured the heat pump installation date so to avoid paying standing charges sooner.
We now additionally added a battery and solar panels and our energy import plummeted.
In essence, we are very happy with our heat pump and would thoroughly recommend Aira.
