Aira air source heat pump in a 1945 - 1964 property

Vince

We are both now retired, and wanted to continue our sustainable energy path. We realise that there are too many mistruths about heat pumps and want to share our experiences.

Installing the system

We had a gas combo boiler for heating and hot water. This was 20+ years old and we replaced it with a Heat pump system. We had already Solar PV and a small household battery. The property was 1949 with cavity-wall insulation and double-glazing all round. The installation took 3 days and 6 of 8 radiators were changed. The installation was in very early January, so we were very relieved that it was 3 days.

Living with a heat pump

The house and hot water have been more than sufficient for us. We made some initial changes to the target heating temperature  but it has been largely left alone. We were very happy to have the gas meter removed and the supply topped off. The daily gas standing charge is no longer being collected.
