Daikin air source heat pump in a 1945 - 1964 property

Paul

We are a family of 5, Kenilworth residents for 15 years. After this time our gas boiler finally gave up. We didn't want to make such a long term investment in a new one and preferred a more modern and environmentally-friendly heat source, especially when we discovered that the cost after the £7.5k grant was only a few hundred pounds more. We've only had it a few months, but happy to share our experiences to help others come to an informed decision.

Installing the system

There are two components to the new system, the pump and the water tank. As well as being connected to each other, both need connecting to the electric meter. Fortunately we didn't need to make any changes to accomodate this other than we lost a useful storage cupboard to accommodate the tank. Octopus carried out a survey and produced a detailed bespoke plan. They told us about a few things we needed to do to prepare, such as getting an EPC, and they arranged for National Grid to upgrade our electricity supply, which was free of charge. The actual installation took 4 days. We felt it went extremely well, at no time did we lose our hot water supply. On the final day I was given a detailed explanation of how it all worked and shown how to install and use the Octopus app.

Living with a heat pump

So far its been great. The house as been at a comfortable temperature 24 hours a day, unlike when we had the boiler and the house was sometimes too hot or too cold. It was explained to me that heat pumps are at their most efficient when running permanently and maintaining a constant temperature, only dropping slightly at night time. The one downside is no longer having unlimited on-demand hot water. It took us a few days to work out what time and for how long we needed to heat the storage tank, especially with 5 showers a day. We are though, able to time this with the hours when we get cheaper electricity.
