Octopus air source heat pump in a 1920 - 1944 property

Elizabeth

We are a family of 4 living in a semi-detached 1930s semi. Our combi boiler was getting very old and we were thinking we might need to replace it some time soon. With the grant the price between a new combi boiler and the heat source pump wasn't too much different and we hope the cost of energy will be equal or slightly less with the heat source pump, but our main driver was environmental.

Installing the system

Our home is EPC rating C/D, Octopus calculated the heat needs based on that. They said we needed to add more insulation to the loft and install a chimney balloon in order for the heat source pump to meet the requirements of the home, which we did before installation. The installation was quite intense, Monday to Friday with 3 installers in the home fitting some new radiators, fitting the heat source pump, fitting the water tank but they were very friendly, knowledgeable and tidy!

Living with a heat pump

It all seems to work great! The hot water is working perfectly, at the cost we were expecting. We've not had much call the use the heating so far as its coming into summer however I feel confident in Octopus's calculation and that the system will deliver what we need (we have it set at 20c during the day and 18c at night). We had an independent energy survey done some time ago as a separate activity and the Octopus calculations matched the independent calculations which is very reassuring! The heating and water systems are very easy to use via the app and I like that there are also 'boost' buttons around the home as a very low tech way of getting an extra boost of heat. The engineer explained all the controls very thoroughly and I understand it better and have more control than I did with the old thermostat.
