Clivet air source heat pump in a 1920 - 1944 property

Matthew

About me
57 years old, working for an energy company. Installed heatpump as it's good for the planet but also hoped I would recover costs through lower energy bills. I would like others to see that it is possible to install a heatpump and heat a home cost effectively in an old 1930's (initially) poorly insulated house

Cost of energy bills per year: 500?

Installing the system

Prior to install we had upgraded insulation over years - loft, cavity wall, double glazing and more recently floors (including under floor heating downstairs) and some insulated plasterboard on walls upstairs.
The install was OK, more visits than planned over a couple of months. I would recommend Oxon Energy to others as they were very friendly and competent with the following caveat. We opted for a fan coil unit that can blow hot or cold air (like an AC unit but powered by the heatpump). This complicated the install and was the main reason it took longer and I'm not sure I would recommend the fan coil accessory to others.

Living with a heat pump

It works and very happy! Main issue was balancing the UFH downstairs which was initially too hot with the radiators upstairs which were too cold. But all good now.
The other challenge is finding the best electricity tariff, it can be a bit of a minefield. We've opted for a cheap overnight tariff Octopus Go and so get the heatpump working hard to heat hot water and UFH overnight with cheaper electricity.
More recently we've added solar panels and battery storage during March. Since then we have had free energy! I think we'll end up paying a small amount for electricity next winter but given we charge an EV and have no gas anymore it's close to my dream of paying nothing for our energy bills. Given we were paying around £3k for gas and electricity previously we should break even in under 10 years with the costs of the solar, battery storage, heatpump and recent insulation.
