About me
Retired couple who have cautiously moved to use energy more efficiently. We now have an electric car, solar panels, battery storage and heat pump. Luckily these all integrate rather well.

Installing the system
Initial survey visit was Early February 2025. We had several quotes so we could compare options and heat loss calculations. We were keen for the installation to be minimally invasive inside our house. Luckily we had space at the back of the garage for the heat pump (9kW heat pump is large) and plenty of space for the 300L hot water tank and associated plumbing in the garage.
We had to wait until end of June 2025 for installation. Bit longer than we would have liked but it meant there wasn’t a rush to get paper work sorted (EPC, boiler grant, asbestos test and tweaking layout for pipe runs).
Pipes were run from the garage under the bedroom floor to link in with the central heating and hot water pipes. We needed 5 out of 14 radiators to be changed.
Equipment arrived a few days before installation started. Each day the various trades people arrived at 8:00 am and worked to a plan. It was a hive of activity for 4 days. The lead installer was very keen to ensure that the install was 100% to our satisfaction.
In conclusion there is a lot more work than we anticipated and it was very noisy at times. However; after 4 days the system was operational and the site left tidy.
Living with a heat pump
We are into our second week. The weather has been warm and therefore the central heating is off. The heat pump quietly keeps our hot water topped up. We use around 3 baths worth and a couple of showers per day. Coming from a combi boiler, we were concerned that we would run out of hot water, but this has not happened.
Cost wise it is much cheaper than gas; although it should be noted that we run the heat pump on Octopus EV tariff (7p Kwh) backed up by battery storage. Currently we are running at 50% of the gas cost.
Hopefully winter will be nice and warm in the house.
