Kensa heat pump in a pre 1920 property

Oliver

In order to limit our environmental impact we need to retrofit more homes with more energy efficient methods. I hope that we can help a few people to select the right improvement methods for their home and help to show that low carbon heating can also greatly improve your homes comfort!

Installing the system

We have recently finished a major renovation of our home. The main property was built in the late 1800s with two extensions added at later dates. The most recent in the 1950s. A crucial aspect of the renovation work was improving the energy efficiency of the building. This included the following insulation methods:
  • Internal wall insulation to solid stone walls
  • External wall insulation to brick cavity walls
  • Replacement of all windows with double glazed windows
  • Replacement of external doors
  • Suspended timber floor insulation
  • Insulation of the roof (both room-in-roof and cold roof)
The above required the property to be stripped right back to the stone/rafters internally. Along with the improvements in the insulation we have also install new radiators and under floor heating. The project started in September 2023 and was finished in January 2025 so around 16 months in total.

Living with a heat pump

We are really pleased with the results. The improved energy efficiency and the heat pump have made the property much more comfortable to live in. We have gone from a poorly insulated house running of a 70kW oil boiler that struggled to heat the house in winter. We used to live in only a few rooms (those with working fireplaces). Now with two 15kW heat pumps the house is always warm (and dry).

The heat pumps have been operational since November 2024. So far we have had no problems and everything has worked perfectly. We have been refining the systems operation to optimise its performance and our comfort.
