Vaillant air source heat pump in a post 2003 property

About me
My wife and I are retired. We have always tried to adopt an environmentally friendly lifestyle. For example, at our previous home we had installed a wood pellet boiler. To begin with, we were uncertain abut installing an ASHP as there are so many mixed opinions about the technology. We are very happy to provide other prospective ASHP owners with the benefit of our experience

Air source heat pump

EPC rating: C

Cost of energy bills per year: £1200 (will go up as we have recently installed an EV charger in addition to the ASHP)

Installing the system

We recently moved into our property which had an oil-fired combi-boiler which was nearing the end of its expected life. We have always tried to avoid burning oil if we can and, with the opportunity presented by the boiler upgrade scheme, it seemed like a good idea to switch to an ASHP. We were happy to consider a local contractor but the first person we approached told us that because we have micro-bore pipes, we needed to have the whole system re-plumbed. So at first we thought it was going to be a non-starter. But then someone else suggested we take a look at Heat Geeks. Visiting their website, it became clear that a properly installed ASHP would work with micro-bore pipes.

We commissioned Heat Geeks to conduct an initial survey and this was carried out by a contractor based relatively close to where we live. Hear Geeks then prepared a detailed proposal which included replacing  about 11 of our existing radiators with more energy efficient rads. We agreed to proceed and the contractor appointed by Hear Geeks, MJS Energy, agreed a start date.

There was a slight hiccough on day 1 as the suggested  location for the cylinder wasn't going to work. Our initial suggestion was to site in where the old boiler had been but when the survey was conducted, we were told there was not enough space to accommodate a cylinder, and they had suggested putting it in one of the bedrooms. On closer examination, the contractors realised this wouldn't work because of the plumbing setup. A somewhat smaller cylinder could be fitted at our preferred location (where the old boiler had been).

The installation took the best part of three weeks but it was done in such a way that we were only without hot water for 1-2 days. We were very impressed with the professional job carried out by the team from MJS.

Living with a heat pump

It is too early to comment as it has only been up and running for a couple of weeks and given the warm weather we haven't needed the heating on.
