Samsung air source heat pump in a pre 1920 property

About me
I'm a semi-retired technologist, living in a house of 6 adults - so plenty of energy and hot water needed! Whilst I'm analytical and ready to dive into detail/data, I'm convinced that heat pumps can work for anyone and are simple to operate. Visiting our home would be suitable for someone considering a larger home install or where they are interested in the data or optimisation journey I've been on.

Air source heat pump

EPC rating: C (last surveyed in 2018)

Cost of energy bills per year: £2650 (2024, pre-ASHP)

Installing the system

I have been researching ASHPs for the past 2 years, looking for a solution that would work for a larger Victorian renovated house, replacing two separate gas boilers. We selected a Samsung 16kW unit. The installation was a bit more complex than originally planned due to some legacy plumbing issues. It took about 3 weeks of core work, plus some additional visits later. We have had 12 solar panels and 19 kWh of home battery plus an EV for the last few years. This installation continues our transition to a low carbon emissions home.

Living with a heat pump

Whilst we have not yet been through a winter, I'm delighted with the results so far. Following some initial optimisation, we now have hot water all day for less energy usage and cost than the same period last year - and no gas! The outdoor unit looks good and operates near-silently. I have some interesting data collected on ASHP energy usage, COP and comparisons with previous years.
