Air source heat pump

Installing the system

My heat pump is part of a fully electric home ecosystem, working in tandem with solar panels, battery storage, and an appropriate energy tariff. The main motivation for this setup was to reduce our energy bills and increase efficiency. The property is a five-bedroom detached house, built in 2015.

The installation process itself went smoothly, but it required a lot of surveys and careful planning beforehand to ensure everything would work together seamlessly. One oversight was that the towel rails were not compatible with the heat pump during the summer months, meaning they wouldn’t heat up when the central heating was off.

Fortunately, Octopus Energy helped resolve this after installation by fitting dual fuel elements to the towel rails, allowing them to operate independently when needed.

Overall, the experience was positive, but I’d recommend being patient and taking the time to really understand how all your heating elements will function throughout the year—especially if you’re making your home fully electric. Pay close attention to where pipes and power cables will be routed, as these details can have a big impact. The hardest part is often knowing what questions to ask in advance to avoid surprises. For example, it wasn’t initially obvious that the pipes couldn’t go directly into the loft and instead had to pass through one of the bedrooms. Fortunately, in our case, the pipes were hidden in a cupboard, so they’re out of sight, but it was still unexpected. Patience and thorough planning really pay off in a project like this.  Nothing worse then making design decisions on day of installation.

Living with a heat pump

Installed May-25;  working fine currently for hot water; saving money compared to gas.   Cannot comment yet with regards to Winter months and associated costs.
