Octopus Energy air source heat pump in a 1965 - 1982 property

About me
We bought our home as first time buyers less than a year ago and then found out about all the offers and grants being given out for heat pumps. We had a 20 year old boiler and so it made perfect sense to replace that with a much more modern energy system and get some new radiators in the process while we renovate. Hopefully by sharing our install we can help counter mis-information and scaremongering about doing something which is a net postive for everyone.

Installing the system

Very tidy and well done installation by Octopus. We're in an end of terrace house with the heat pump in the back garden against the garden wall. Took 5 days in total which is understandable considering that a lot of new pipework had to be installed, the old boiler was removed and 7 new radiators were installed. We had to put the tank in a cupboard upstairs as it would have involved a lot more work to get the attic ready for it, but the boiler cupboard has been freed up a bit to compensate for that. Installers were very self sufficient and did the job each day while we were out at work and locked up after themselves with no problems. All the rubbish (quite a lot of it) was taken away the same day the install finished. After changing a gas oven too we have now removed the gas meter which is saving us from paying the gas standing charge.

Living with a heat pump

Ours has only just been installed so we've only used it for hot water so far and not heating the home, but it does a very good job of that and it very easy to operate. Water is easily hot enough to use for anything and only takes about 30-45 minutes to get to a warm enough temperature from cold (currently in the summer though so will have to see in the winter).
