LG air source heat pump in a pre 1920 property

Stephen

I was originally a resource and energy economist, and have retained an interest in the area. Additionally, the whole GHG and Net Zero issue is so obvious. I'm prepared to accept a longish payback on the investments, since this is anyway close to what I'd get if I left the money in a bank (except of course that I can't liquidate it in an emergency).

Installing the system

The property dates from about 1830, heavily refurbished in 2007 with full double-glazing and better insulation - but still solid masonry walls.  Most radiators on the ground floor were increased in size or layers.  The installation took 2-3 weeks and was fine throughout.  I have added extra insulation including under the ground floor (in the cellar), and secondary glazing to make effectively triple-glazing for some windows.  Additionally, there is solar PV, which has just been added to.

Living with a heat pump

My big surprise - shouldn't have been though - is the more or less complete mismatch between the output of the solar PV and the electricity demands of the ASHP.  I've got round this to some degree with a solar diversion switch (solar electricity when available - scarcely at all in winter - is used to power the HW tank immersion heater) and getting a good export tariff for excess summer production via Octopus.

Visiting my heat pump: I'm contactable at will for questions about ASHP, and the interface with solar PV.
