Mitsubishi air source heat pump in a 1920 - 1944 property

About me
We wanted to decarbonise our household and our biggest emissions were heating and transport. Also I work in domestic ventilation so learning about related technologies was a motivation.

Air source heat pump

Installing the system

Mitsubishi Ecodan 8.5kW heat pump and 250l hot water cylinder installed on existing radiator heating system.
A couple of radiators have since been replaced with larger ones.

We had solar PV panels and a battery installed first and these work very well with the heat pump system to reduce running cost.

Since installation a local company vinyl wrapped our heat pump to a dark grey colour. The manufacturer was happy for this to be done as long has all air paths were kept clear. The wrapping company had never done a heat pump before but did a great job.

We have slotted fencing around the heat pump given its prominent location at the front of our house. Restricting airflow around an ASHP is not recommended so we knew this might be a risk on performance. However I have monitored it with and without the front screen and the only time there is any difference is in very cold weather (sub zero) when I remove the screen temporary.

Note I work for another part of our installation company 21 Degrees. Also I have done quite a bit of tinkering with my system as it’s something that interests me.

Living with a heat pump

Heating side hasn’t been that different as in advance of installation of the heat pump I had been running our gas boiler with as low a flow temperature as I could for longer periods of time. This is a good way to see how your existing radiators would perform at lower flow temperatures from a heat pump.

The hot water tool a little bit more adjusting to to work out how the best way to heat the tank having come from a combi boiler.
We settled on heating this a couple of times a day but maybe in hindsight a larger cylinder heated once a day would be better.
I plan in the future to install heat recovery on the waste to our shower (by far the biggest use of hot water in our house) and this may mean we could go to once a day hot water.
