Vaillant air source heat pump in a 1965 - 1982 property

About me
We decided to get a heat pump to avoid the few tonnes of carbon emissions generated by our gas boiler. It took 18 months to get there, engaging with a few installers and learning lots along the way. I’m very happy to help others by sharing my understanding & experience, and showing the system.

Installing the system

Our property is a 4 bed end-terrace built around 1980, with a single storey extension added in 2014. About 115sqm in total. Insulation comprises 300mm loft insulation and partial fill cavity wall, doors & windows are UPVC double glazed. Solar PV was installed in 2024.
The main hurdle in getting a heat pump was micro-bore pipework (8mm copper). The 8mm could have been made to work, just about, but we decided to have it replaced. Consequently the installation took 2 weeks rather than 1. The system comprises a 7kW heat pump, 170 litre cylinder and 4 radiator changes.
The installers themselves were great - experienced, knowledgeable, good comm’s throughout, nice people.

Living with a heat pump

Installation was in summer 2025, so space heating has not been required to-date.
The hot water cylinder has been heated as one would expect.
The heat pump has been incredibly quiet (inaudible) so far.
