I am keen on reducing my carbon footprint and I like technology. The efficency of heat pumps has to be a winner in the long term, but getting the right installer, getting good advice, is tricky. I visited some heatpump installs when making the choice, so am keen to help others

Installing the system

We had our heat pump installed when we did an extension. Part of our downstairs is underfloor heating and part has radiators. We had cavity wall insulation (beads) retrofitted a few years earlier, and have double glazing. The installation took some planning. We wanted a heat pump engineer of our choice to install it, rather than the gas engineer the builder who did the extension wanted to use, so we had coordination issues. Also the local council were incompetent at reading plans and believed it was too close to the neighbour's fence, but eventually they visited onsite and verified it the correct distance from the boundary.

We have subsequently had our gas main disconnected, solar and batteries installed.

Living with a heat pump

The heat pump as worked really well. Having a constant tempature in the house has been nice. We did have the installer come back and tweak some pipework to make the sound of the water in the pipes indoors a bit quieter. During our annual service it was noticed that a relay was buzzing loudly, so it was replaced for £10 by the engineer.
