Octopus air source heat pump in a 1965 - 1982 property

Samantha

About me
We moved to our current location to move away of hubbub of busy towns. As part of the move we budgeted for adding a heat pump, battery and solar to be as energy self sufficient as possible even if there are power cuts, and it is working well. So the heat pump is a cog in that project. We are open for visitors primarily to help people with planning their energy switch over to a heat pump and see what is involved physically in having this installed and what it is like to live with.

Installing the system

We opted to install the air source heat pump (a Cosy 9 unit) through Octopus our electricity supplier. They surveyed the property and as part of the package which included the heat pump, water cylinder, radiator changes of which we needed 5 upgrading, labour and any associated pipework.  The original installed was scheduled for 5 days, but ended up being 3.5 days as we sited the heat pump in a more suitable location.  There are works you might need to do to meet the criteria for the Government grant (BUS scheme), we needed to switch an internal door for an external door to a boot room as that had no heating. Octopus organise everything with the grant so you need not do anything.

Living with a heat pump

So far we are happy with the heat pump.  We adjusted the heating of the water cylinder to meet our usage, which was to heat it to 50° at 11am for 1 hour every day except on Sunday when we heat it to 60° at 1am for 1 hour, which is recommended for cleansing. The pump isn't on for the whole hour as it powers down when to reaches temperature.  We have put the heating on a few times since moving into autumn and as expected the heat pump is a slow burner in the sense it doesn't heat the radiators up instantly to hot like our old gas boiler system did, but a more gradual increase.  The radiators do reach a good heat, but not high heat like our old system, but then that is the point of the heat pump, it is a more continuous heat source if that makes sense.

Accessing the venue

A moderate amount of driveway parking for about 4 or 5 cars. Slightly steep into the driveway if you have a very low slung car. The road leading up to our property is a little narrow, so anything wider than a typical pick-up or van might have difficulty.
