Mitsubishi air source heat pump in a 1945 - 1964 property

Alistair

I'm a professional engineer who read too many times that it wouldn't be possible to make most UK housing stock low carbon. Red rag to a bull! So I ran the sums, worked out that a 3 bed red-brick semi (which is what this started as) can absolutely be low carbon and made it so.

Installing the system

We had already modernised the double glazing and the extensions were to modern building standards, which included loft installation.  We put in the PV then realised we could be running a heat pump from it.  Installation took a little under a week, no mess, very little disruption.

Living with a heat pump

This is an air to water heat pump providing all heating on hot water.  We are on grid but generate all the electricity we use from a solar PV array and use a house battery so we can almost always use stored solar or low cost overnight energy.  This makes the heat pump much cheaper to run than the gas boiler it replaced.  We have a fully electrified house and an EV, no energy bill and make a few hundred pounds each year selling surplus energy.  We are reinvesting this money in supporting cooperative renewable energy projects.  Our house is an extended 1950s red brick semi like you see all over the country and one reason for doing this project was to prove that a typical UK family home can go low carbon and benefit from it.  No lifestyle changes here, just a warm home, happy family, low carbon future lived out today.
