About me
Hi I'm Martin. We are a family of 4. We wanted to reduce our carbon footprint and rely less on fossil fuels. We are fortunate here in Scotland to have plenty of clean windpower so lets make use of it :) With help from EST loans we have installed a heat pump, battery system, solar and now have electric car.

Air source heat pump

Installed by 1314 renewables

EPC rating: A

Cost of energy bills per year: £1,800 (includes 10,000 miles in electric car)

Installing the system

Installation took 3 days. All the radiators were changed to slightly bigger ones. New hot water tank. Other than a couple of minor teething problems, installation was very easy.

Living with a heat pump

Heat pump installed October 2023 including upgraded radiators, replacing gas boiler. House lovely and warm all day, lots hot water. Very happy. Even through coldest of winter no problems.

  • Short term our house is a constant 20oC rather than warming and cooling as it did with the gas boiler.

  • Medium term our energy monthly direct debit has dropped significantly.

  • Long term (~7 years) the saving made on energy will pay off the loan to install the system and we will have very low energy bills.

Over the past year the heat pump has worked with an efficiency of 430% which means for every 1 unit of electricity we pay for heating we get 3.3 free :)

Things to be aware of...

  • 95% of the time the heat pump is silent. You will never know it is there. When it is very cold (e.g. around 0 degrees)  the pump has to work hard and there is occasionally a very low hum, a bit like the noise the fridge makes. It is barely audible and has never bothered us.
  • When it is cold (e.g. less than 4 degrees) the efficiency of the heat pump drops so it uses proportionally more electricity. This is offset by the efficiency you get in the rest of the year so again isn't an issue.
