Detached property in Truro

Air source heat pump in a 1965 - 1982 property, hosted by Richard.

There is sadly, a huge amount of misinformation about Heat Pump installations in the media. It is perfectly feasible to retrofit this technology to existing properties, often with little or no changes required.

Installing the system

The bungalow already had cavity wall insulation and the loft insulation was increased to 400 mm.

The original radiators were kept and the hot water cylinder now occupies the space where the boiler sat.

The installation took 3 days.

Living with a heat pump

A ten year old oil boiler was replaced in September 2023 with a 7kW Vaillant aroTHERM plus system. With the current government grant of £7,500, this can be a cheaper option than replacing the oil boiler.

The property has cavity wall insulation and 400 mm of loft insulation. Despite keeping all the original radiators, the system has achieved an efficiency of 430% (COP of 4.3) during the winter months. This results in running costs that are comparable to mains gas.
