Living with a heat pump

We did a lot of work on the house when I retired in 2020, and took weekly meter readings to chart the effect of each step we took.

1. Triple Glazing
2. External Wall Insulation
3. Heat Pump
4. Solar PV + Battery

Our house stays at around 20 °C all year round and our bills are low. With the new Octopus Intelligent Go tariff our bills are around £200 /year.

We have a winter and a summer regime. In winter we buy cheap electricity at night and run heavy loads - dryer and washer and hot water heating - during the cheap rate. We then run off the battery until it runs out - which happens mainly in December and January. In spring and autumn we don't need to buy any full price electricity. In summer, we charge up the battery from solar PV during the day and run heavy loads - including hot water heating - during the day - and then run overnight on the battery.
