Vaillant air source heat pump in a 1945 - 1964 property

About me
Decided in January 2023 that a new heating system was needed so started looking at heat pumps. Didn't want to waste money on a new gas boiler. By June 2023 we had completed the installation. No regrets - it's been fantastic!

Installing the system

In June 2023 we installed a 7kWh Vaillant AeroTherm Plus air source heat pump and 200 litre water cylinder. It replaced a 15 year old gas combi boiler. We now have no gas connection to the house.

No major changes were made to the fabric of our house following on from our heat loss report:

  • We have swapped out 3 radiators to date as we have decorated rooms.
  • Our front facing windows were in very bad shape so they have been replaced with triple glazed units.
  • We added another roll of loft insulation to the section of loft that was not boarded.
  • We have a wooden front door with single glazed windows which creates quite a draft, so have added an insulated curtain for now.
  • Again, while decorating we have put new carpets upstairs in most of the rooms, with thicker underlay

Living with a heat pump

We have really enjoyed our first 18 months with our the heat pump. It's lead to a much more consistent level of heating in our property. The first winter season taught us a lot about changes to the settings we had, along with the electricity tariff we were using (initially Cosy Octopus, now Octopus Agile). We are very confident that we are saving money vs our old gas boiler. The hot water has been great and we have that scheduled to 'recharge' when energy is cheapest.

Highly recommend others to consider upgrading their heating system, with a particular emphasis on those that have very old boilers.
