Vaillant air source heat pump in a 1965 - 1982 property

Andy

We are a professional couple, lived in Berko for nearly 10 years (5 in this house). We are very concerned about the environment, and this was one small thing we thought we could do to lower our CO2 emmissions. I have become slightly obsessed with heatpumps in researching this - so happy to pass on my findings!

Installing the system

We installed our Vaillant Arotherm+ 5KW Air Source heat pump (with a heat geek 230l water cylinder) in our three bed end terrace at the end of March 2024 replacing our aging gas combi boiler. Our home was pretty well insulated but we did have to install larger radiators throughout the house. We have 7 x 395W (2.765KWh) solar panels on our SE facing roof and a 5kW battery which can power this heatpump on sunny days. We did have to complete a front step and front garden reconfiguration, and fitting of garage doors to an existing bin-shed to accomodate this installation. Both needed to be done so was a win-win.

Living with a heat pump

We are really enjoying the constant, consistent heat that our home now has. No more heating and cooling cycles we had with a combi boiler.  We have an Octopus Cosy tarrif, is helping us to power the pump with load shifting away from expensive times (4-7pm). Our average tarriff rate is only 13p/KWh which will really help in winter. We find with three charges of our battery per day on the low Cosy rate we can run our heatpump all day when needed including a water heating cycle. It is super quiet and doesn't disturb anyone - standing next to it we hardly know its working! We have played around with some of the timing to start at 6am to get the first bit on low tariff and we setback at 7pm which means it doesn't really run much overnight.
