  • 185 sq.m. much extended 30’s suburban villa; 4 beds, 3 reception, large kitchen, utility etc.; insulated as far as practicable (EPC score 74, grade C). Also solar panels, induction hob, EV charger.
  • ASHP and 250 litre cylinder installed Jan 2022; equipment costs largely covered by government grants but significant replumbing and some new radiators were needed.
  • We run the house at 16-19 degrees Centigrade using Hive zoned thermostats when resident; it feels warmer than before as the fabric isn’t allowed to cool too much.
  • The ASHP uses about 7000kWh per annum for heat and hot water (the latter augmented by solar panels).
  • We have a variable electricity tariff (Octopus), but estimate running costs are at least 5% less than an equivalent input in kWh from a modern gas boiler (conservatively assuming a SCOP of 3.5), and we no longer pay a gas standing charge.
  • Annual service costs about £230, but this includes breakdown cover with a 10 year warranty so less than BG Homecare, for example.
