Living with a heat pump

We installed our heat pump in October 2022. Before getting the heat pump, we had been doing up our Victorian end terrace slowly for a while. We put on a roof extension and a kitchen extension, both of which improved the insulation in those parts of the house naturally. We also put in underfloor heating downstairs as luxury and changed the very old single glazed windows for double glazing. As our house is at the end of terrace, we used a government grant to insulate the outside of the end wall. I think of this as the equivalent of putting another house next to us making us mid terrace and keeping the warmth from escaping. Then we removed the gas boiler and switched to the heat pump.

We have now had two winters with all of our heating and hot water being provided by the heat pump. The headline is that we are warm. Very warm. In fact, we are much more comfortable than when heating with the gas boiler. My partner described it well, “it’s like it’s summer all the time, indoors you have no idea how cold it is outdoors because it is such a constant temperature”.

The process of the switch was fairly seamless but not particularly quick. So, my advice to other people is to start before your old boiler is broken down or on its last legs.
