I think the heat pump is a wonderful invention and installing it was an important contribution to minimisng my impact on the environment. It is a more controllable, quieter and pleasant way of heating the house than the gas boiler it replaced.

Installing the system

The property was built in 1971, and has cavity walls that have been filled, most windows have primary double glazing but two of them have just secondary double glazing. The heat pump was installed in January 2024 and replaced the gas boiler which dated from the 1980s.

Changes made to the property:

- Six of the nine radiators were replaced with new ones as part of the installation,
- an ornamental gas fire in the lounge was removed and the chimney blocked up, and it has now been capped.
- the cold water and header tank in the loft were removed and the system now operates at mains pressure. Following this I had extra loft insulation particularly in the areas of the loft where the tanks were.

Living with a heat pump

I also have solar power. The removal of the water tanks from the loft has made it much easier to access the inverter for maintenance.
