Vaillant air source heat pump in a 1945 - 1964 property

David

We are a family of 4 (2 adults, 2 young children) - we wanted to install a heat pump to reduce our carbon footprint and to improve the warmth in our home. We are opening our home for visitors to demonstrate how fantastic a heat pump is and to bust the myths out there

Installing the system

The installation took 2 weeks, during this time we actually went away on holiday which benefitted the heating engineer as well as us. On return the house looked almost exactly as we left it; the installer did an amazing job at keeping everything neat and hidden away. All we had to do was relay the flooring (carpet in living rooms and LVT in the hall) and refit the skirting board, which was done in 2 days by a handyman.

  • Retrofitted underfloor heating on the ground floor and in bathrooms,
  • New radiators in the bedrooms
  • 250l hot water tank installed where the combi boiler used to be
  • 21 solar panels, east/west facing roof. Generate around 5000kWh per year
  • We topped up the roof insulation to 300mm and installed a new insulated loft hatch
  • Standard double glazing and filled cavity wall

Living with a heat pump

Our heat pump has been running at a COP of around 5.0 based on the last 18 months (i.e. 500% efficiency, or 1 kWh of energy in for 5kWh heat energy into our home)

This efficiency, along with solar panels, solar exports and Octopus Intelligent tariff has meant our energy costs have halved since moving from a gas boiler to heat pump (~£1200 saving each year which includes all heating, hot water, house usage, EV charging for ~15000 miles)

Most importantly, the house is warm (which it never was before with the gas boiler) and we have a plentiful supply of hot water.

It has been an absolute game changer and made our home much more comfortable to live in during the winter months.
