Daikin air source heat pump in a pre 1920 property

About me
I'm concerned about climate change. Happy to show people around to demonstrate that reducing your carbon footprint dramatically usually also saves money and leads to a much more comfortable life.

Air source heat pump

Cost of energy bills per year: £294.60

Installing the system

All electric Edwardian (1902) detached house.

  • Daikin Altherma EDLA08E2V3 8kW monobloc heat pump with Mixergy 210 litre hot water tank, all installed by British Gas, replaced a 10 year old 92% efficient gas boiler and MegaFlo tank in September 2023.
  • All radiators (no underfloor heating). A few radiators had to be upgraded but they are no wider than the original radiators (they just stick out a couple of centimetres more from the wall).

Living with a heat pump

The system will run itself, so you don't need to worry about any of the details below, but I've included them in case people are interested.

Additional energy-saving measures:
  • 9.6KWh LG home battery
  • 10 solar photovoltaic panels with SolarEdge inverter and optimisers (4.05 kWp)
  • Fully electric car (our only car, takes us all around Europe) - the energy bill amount above excludes car charging
  • Wall insulation (part external, part internal)
  • Part under-floor insulation
  • Insulated loft conversion
  • Argon-filled double glazing

It's the carbon savings that really matter, but here are our financial costs! During the 12 months before our gas supply was capped we used 13,431 kWh of gas (£818 at best price on 20/04/2024) after removing a few percent for our gas hob. Our heat pump has used 2,932 kWh of electricity in the last 12 months. So, we are currently saving roughly £500 per year compared to our gas boiler (we would be saving £169 per year if we were on flat rate electricity (best price on 20/04/2024) instead of having solar and battery on Octopus Intelligent Go).

Our Daikin Madoka room thermostat is usually set to 18 degrees at night and in the middle of the day, 20 for a couple of hours before we wake up, and 21 from mid-afternoon to late evening.

The weather-dependent curve is set at 47 degrees radiator water temperature when it's -2 degrees outside and 25 degrees radiator water temperature when it's 19 degrees outside. Hot water tank is set to 47 degrees with a fortnightly 55 degree legionella cycle (we make a full tank each night during the cheap tariff period).

Current SCOP values:
  • heating 4.0
  • hot water 2.9
  • combined 3.4

We save money by scheduling our dishwasher, washing machine and heating our water during the off-peak hours, when electricity is also greener.
