Stiebel Eltron air source heat pump in a pre 1920 property

Andy

We decided that we wanted to install a heat pump around 10 years ago, as part of a major renovation project to a c.1600 cornish cottage. We did a lot of research and are pleased with our system. I have been surprised about the amount of misleading and unhelpful information out there and want to do my bit to communicate truth about efficient heating systems.

Installing the system

Old traditional Cornish stone cottage with extensions (EPC F).  Ongoing major renovation and retrofitting project.  300mm+ loft insulation.  Double glazing throughout.  No EWI or IWI (wall insulation) on solid stone walls.  No cavity wall insulation (1970's extension).  Decided to install UFH throughout - this was a big and disruptive job, but glad we did it.  Have plans for another extension.  We have done a lot of the building and prep work ourselves.  The actual installation week went very well.  Also installed: 3.84kWp solar array and 9.5kW AC coupled Givenergy home battery system.  Currently on Octopus Cosy tariff.

Living with a heat pump

15kW Stiebel Eltron ASHP; positioned 13m from the property (underground insulated pipes); 100-litre buffer tank; 300-litre DHW tank; DHW secondary return installed; heating circuit: UFH throughout ground floor, radiators first floor; Heatmiser controls for the heating circuit.  Very pleased with: comfort, efficiency, and cost effectiveness.
