Air source heat pump
Installed by Reco Energy
Installing the system
Removed the suspended timber floor and replaced it with a solid foamed glass floor with underfloor heating. Added 100mm internal wall insulation. Upstairs radiators replaced but similar sizes to the old ones. Hot water tank and heat pump controls/plumbing added where the boiler used to be. Reco were excellent with our heat pump installation, working around the other changes even when they overran and ours plans changed.
Living with a heat pump
8.5kW Mitsubishi Ecodan heat pump. Wet underfloor heating through most of ground floor, radiators elsewhere. 250L hot water cylinder. Overall COP Sept 2023 to Sept 2024 of 3.8.
House is ~1870 end-terrace. We’ve added internal wall insulation and replaced the suspended timber floor with a foamed glass solid floor.
We never hear the pump inside. Outside, noise is sometimes noticeable, sometimes barely audible, depending how hard the pump is working. It’s quieter than the noise of the road at the front of the house.
Comfort is great. It just works. We have the thermostat at 18 all day, dropping to 16 overnight. The pump comes on when it needs to and keeps the house at a nice steady temperature. Radiators are just warm to the touch (mostly 31 degrees flow temperature). Hot water is plenty warm enough at 42-47 and we’ve never run out (and it won’t burn toddler hands!).
