Vaillant air source heat pump in a 1945 - 1964 property

Owen

I am a 35. year old scientist, living with my husband and our dog. We decided to install a heat pump because we wanted to move away from fossil fuels. We also realised that an air souce heat pump would help on our electrification journey. We've learned a lot from having a heat pump, including what to look for when reaching out to installers and what to avoid. I'm keen to encourage others to embrace heat pumps and not listen to the naysayers and detractors for this fantastic technology. As a scientist, I love the data that comes from the system but also love talking about it to anyone non-technologically minded who is interested in listening!

Installing the system

We have done a complete retrofit of a 1950s house adding an extension of 40sq m in the process.  During this we have installed underfloor heating throughout, upgraded windows and improved the insulation within the home.  We have also then installed a 5kW air to water air source heat pump with a 200L hot water tank.

Don't however be put off by the amount of work we have had done.  This isn't necessary to have a heat pump installed at your property.  You may need to change a few radiators, but heat pumps work in the vast majority of properties in the UK - from 300 yr old solid stone cottages, to modern new builds.

Living with a heat pump

We love living with the ASHP, it provides a really comfortable heat to the house - not too hot, not too cold.  Without costing a fortune.  It works perfectly and is really a leave and forget system.

Across the year the house has been a static 21C, without the huge temperature swings that you get with a more traditional gas boiler.  On top of that, when we finally get round to adding solar panels and batteries it will mean for about 2/3 of the year we will have zero bills!  Plus not having gas at the property also means we pay no gas standing charge - a win-win.

Visiting my heat pump: Always happy to talk to people thinking about getting an ASHP, happy to also answer questions about them. Work from home, so with notice can accommodate day time and evening.

Message Owen if you want to ask them something about their heat pump or the process of getting one installed. Click request a visit above if you want to arrange a visit.
