Mitsubishi air source heat pump in a 1965 - 1982 property

About me
I've been interested in reducing my carbon footprint for a while, first through getting solar panels, then the car, and the heat pump naturally followed! I'm happy to share my experience because I want to show how it's not a big deal and it can save money in the long run.

Air source heat pump

EPC rating: B

Cost of energy bills per year: £1000

Installing the system

Heat pump retrofitted to replace the gas boiler, with just two radiator changes. Solar panels and external wall insulation were added separately. House is plenty warm, running at 21-22c.

Additional measures: triple glazing, solar gain reduction windows, draft proofing, chimney decommissioning.

Living with a heat pump

I'm happy to talk about getting used to moving to a heat pump. I misguidedly kept my old 'smart' controls so I didn't get the best out of it without a lot of tweaking. After a couple of years it now runs quietly, efficiently (SCOP 4) and the house stays at a fairly constant temperature.

I'm also an advocate for fresh air, so the house gets a good airing at least once every day!

Running costs:
- import 7000kWh/year
- export 2500kWh/year
- heat load 4000kwh/200sqm. EPC B (89)
- car usage 2500kWh/year
