Installing the system

In July 2024 we had a Daikin Altherma 9kw Air Source Heat Pump, hot water tank and various radiators fitted by Octopus energy. The 30-year-old gravity fed gas boiler, hot water tank and tanks in the loft were remove. The new system is now connected to the main increasing the pressure allowing us to fit a Rainfall style shower which is a big hit with the family.

The reason for wanting a ASHP was to reduce our energy consumption and get off gas therefore we also swapped the Gas Hob for an induction hob, thus allowing Octopus to remove the gas meter at the same time.

As part of the process the EPC identified that our loft installation would benefit with add some additional insulation, so we added some more prior to the install.

We decide to switch to the Octopus cosy tariff. As its summer we have not needed to use the central heating, but the hot water comes on approx. twice a day at 6.00 am and 1.00 pm to make use of the cheap cosy Tariff slots and uses between 2 and 3kw of electric per day. The new 210 ltr slim line hot water tank is very efficient, there is no heat coming off it unlike the old tank.

Living with a heat pump

Jan 2025 - So we have been living with the heat pump for nearly 6 months now, even thought the couple of very cold snaps (-4c).  Our home stays lovely and warm, plenty of hot water.  No annoying, noisy Gas boiler firing up in the morning or clinking pipes.

Below is a chart showing our TOTAL energy usage from Jan 2020 to Dec 2024, the RED row is the average of 2020, 2021,2022 & 2023. You can see the monthly energy saving in Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov & Dec 2024 and the %age saving in the Green Row.

Very happy with our saving.
