Midea air source heat pump in a 1920 - 1944 property

Dan

I'm an ecologist and now work in the Climate Change Team at Shropshire Council. I like to practice what I preach. I've been gradually been greening our home but inheritance allowed this at a faster pace and a greater ambition. I don't have detailed technical knowledge about heat pumps but understand the basic ideas and why they are such a great idea. So I'm very happy to promote them further.

Installing the system

Our heat pump has been part of a major retrofit of our 1930s solid-wall semi-detached house. This includes MVHR, external wall insulation, underfloor heating, a loft conversion, removal of all gas heating and cooking, etc. The heat pump has been a relatively minor part of this process and didn't take long. The MVHR has been difficult and we still have lots of boxing in of pipes to sort. The whole retrofit started in March 2023 and as of October 2024 is still going on.
The hot-water tank that was installed with the ASHP did have a damaged seal that had a slight leak so this was replaced recently.

Living with a heat pump

The heat pump has been working perfectly. We haven't yet connected it to our underfloor heating so it's just been heating our hot water. I would like to also have more control of when the heat pump kicks in so it can make the most of electricity from our solar panels.
We took some time to find the best location for the unit but we're happy with it being a few metres from the house - despite the need for trenching. It's a very quiet unit and barely noticeable.
