Vaillant air source heat pump in a 1965 - 1982 property

Michael

We wanted to install a heat pump to produce low carbon heat at a similar cost to our previous gas boiler, along with installing solar and a battery to reduce our electricity bill.

Installing the system

The heat pump replaced 13 of our radiators as requested by the installer, to minimise potential future issues. Roughly half of the existing radiators were of a suitable size to be reused.  Gas boiler was removed, and the hot water cylinder replaced an electric shower.
Installation preparation took us about three days (removing hardwood flooring, moving furniture away from pipe runs and covering furniture with dust covers).
Heating installation itself took two days.
Scaffolding was erected in one day, then solar (9 x 420W Mono PERC JA Solar panels and 3.6kW Solis inverter) and (5kWh Puredrive) battery installation took one day.
Additionally, mechanical sub floor vents were installed. Underfloor insulation is proving difficult to install.
Mostly funded with a grant from Warmer Homes Scotland.

Living with a heat pump

The heat pump has worked as expected, producing heat and hot water efficiently, at a similar cost to the previous gas boiler. Solar and battery are helping to reduce our bills.
