NIBE air source heat pump in a post 2003 property

Jez

I am a researcher in building energy performance at UCL. I decided to install a heat pump for 2 reasons. The first was part of me and my partners mission to reduce our own personal carbon emissions. The second was as a practical test of my own knowledge of energy efficiency to check that it was possible to get a heat pump installed in the UK that worked as intended.

Installing the system

Detached house built in 2011 by major UK housing developer. Original gas system boiler replaced with 8kW NIBE air source heat pump in 2020. Replaced 15 radiators out of 17. Kept original microbore pipework. Renewable systems include 3.92 kWpeak solar PV (16 panels) and 2m2 flat plate solar thermal panel. Also fitted myenergi EDDI hot water diverter and myenergi ZAPPI EV charger.

Living with a heat pump

Heat pump has worked as expected. There were a few niggles to start with due to a couple of faulty components - but those were fixed quicky without any fuss. System heats up the house just fine, even when it got really cold during the winter of 22/23 when the outside temperature dropped to -10°C. Efficiency is great, averaging around 425% per year over the past 4 years. I keep the inside temperature round 21°C during the day with a setback of around 19°C overnight. The house is much more comfortable than with the gas boiler and we now heat all rooms to a nice even temperature. The system also provides plenty of hot water for our needs.
