Mitsubishi air source heat pump in a pre 1920 property

Maddie

About me
I am a process engineer by training and after fitting double glazing and improving the insulation it was the obvious next step to get a heat pump to reduce my carbon footprint. I am part of the local climate action group and want to encourage more people to switch to low carbon heating now it is cheaper than gas to run if you get a heat pump tariff.

About this property

Guildford, GU4

4 bedrooms

Air source heat pump

EPC rating: C

Cost of energy bills per year: Around £1200 and includes the EV car

Installing the system

We have a house with solid walls and radiators and a modern kitchen extension with underfloor heating. We’ve had solar PV since 2010 and added more PV and a 10kW battery in 2023. Insulation has always been added when the opportunity arose, originally to reduce the gas bill, such as under the new roof.

Living with a heat pump

The heat pump is fine.  No trouble. We have tried running the heating load intermittently like a gas boiler and now run it more constantly over the day.  Combined with the battery our monthly costs have come down significantly.
