Mitsubishi air source heat pump in a pre 1920 property
Robin
We work from home, so the house is occupied most of the time. We had the heat pump installed to reduce our carbon footprint.

Air source heat pump
Installed by Cotswold Energy Group
Installing the system
Our heat pump was installed in March 2023.
Prior to the installation, we had a ‘retrofit assessment’. This identified that we had no insulation in some of our cavity walls and some other poorly insulated spots. We corrected these before putting the heat pump in.
The installers calculated the heat demand for every room prior to the installation. This was to size the heat pump but also identify the rooms that needed larger radiators (we replaced double panel radiators with triple panels of the same width and height).
We decided we didn’t want the heat pump next to the house, so had tucked behind a garden shed with a buried insulated pipe connecting it to the house.
We decided to replace our gas hob with an electric one and install an EV charger at the same time as the heat pump was put in. This saved us money and disruption. We’ve had the house disconnected from the gas grid.
The whole installation took 5 days. The installers were professional and tidy. They provided electric heaters, so the house didn’t get cold.

Living with a heat pump
We are very happy with our heat pump. It is much easier to control temperatures (via an app) than my old boiler. The heat pump and radiator sizes are sufficient to heat all the rooms on the coldest days.
We moved onto a variable price tariff for heat pump users (Cosy Octopus). Then this year we installed a storage battery. This means that the heating is always running on half price electricity and our bills are significantly lower.
