Air source heat pump

Installed by Heat Geek / Alton & Jones

Cost of energy bills per year: £1400

Installing the system

Our house is on the Emmbrook estate, built by Laing in the 1960s and typical of this type of development. We have double glazing, cavity wall and loft insulation with radiators throughout - no under-floor heating. We also have a small 3kw solar PV array on the roof.  The pump was installed by local Heat Geek installer Tommy Jones and we upgraded 7 radiators at the same time to maximise the heat pump's efficiency. The installation took about 7 days and went very smoothly.

Living with a heat pump

The system was installed in October 24 so we are experiencing our first winter with the new set up. The house is heated to a constant 20 degrees with the heat pump automatically adjusting the radiator temperature to maintain this, according to how cold it is outside. The temperature is incredibly stable, very comfortable and a significant change to having the heating switch on/off with the old gas boiler.  So far the system efficiency seems very good and we estimate our total annual energy bill for the house will be c. £1400, although the solar PVs are contributing c £600 on top of this.
