Mitsubishi air source heat pump in a 1965 - 1982 property

Lesley

When I think about our seemingly lemming like rush for climate armageddon I can't breathe. But by adding a heat pump (take that Putin, take that fossil fuel companies) and sharing this with friends, neighbours and interested parties, makes me think there might be some hope.

Cost of energy bills per year: £1200 (we've just changed to Octopus Agile, so perhaps it might be less this winter?)

Installing the system

We started with insulation - room by room upstairs - as we have a dormer bungalow; that's a lot of heat loss, drafts and condensation. We added solar panels 10 years ago and now we use our solar panels to help heat our hot water tank. We added a heat pump as part of our kitchen makeover. We decided on underfloor heating downstairs and have kept our radiators upstairs. We've had our heat pump since October 2023.

Living with a heat pump

It took us a little while to get used to the long time lag of the heat pump - and I think this is might be made worse by underfloor heating - but once we got the hang of it, we never been so draught free, warm and cosy. Our energy bill has gone down a little bit, which is good too.
