Vaillant air source heat pump in a 1965 - 1982 property

Matt

We are renovating our 1960's Cotswold Stone property to suit our family of 5. We installed a heat pump as it was the best alternative to renewing the oil based system that was previously installed, and aligns with our aims of being as "green" as possible

Installing the system

Our house is a solid stone property built in the late 1960's.   There's no cavity (therefore no cavity insulation).  Loft insulation meets current requirements, and there's no insulation in the floor.
We have radiators throughout the property - and had all pipework replaced when we renovated in 2023.  We were fortunate to be able to do this during a time where we were not living in the property, but it was a necessary replacement due to a very dated oil heating system that had been installed when the house was built.

Living with a heat pump

Our house runs at 20 degrees throughout the year and always feels cosy.
The heat pump runs very efficiently (around 4.5-5 COP) and using the Octopus Agile tariff we manage to keep our costs manageable.
It took zero adjustment moving from a gas combi at our old property to the water tank with the heat pump.  Hot water is always there when we need it - and yes - we can have a hot shower!
