Installing the system

I had my gas boiler replaced with a 7kW Vaillant aroTHERM Plus heat pump in June 24 by Aira Home Ltd, the aroTHERM heat pump is an amazing piece of kit, virtually silent and amazingly efficient.   I’ve not experienced a full winter yet but my efficiency figure for October 24 are 1131kW of heat produced for a mere 211.2kWh of electricity consumed, that’s a COP of 5.4.   I love getting something for nothing and those figures equate to 933.1kW of free energy in one month!

For a heat pump to be cheaper to run than a gas or oil boiler it helps if you also have solar panels and a home storage battery and owning an EV will enable you to benefit from the cheapest electricity tariff whereby you pay about 25% the normal rate for electricity.   I have an 8kWp solar PV system with a 20kWh home storage battery and this has enabled me to shift 95% of my consumption to the Intelligent Octopus EV tariff at 7p/kWh.

Living with a heat pump

My gas bill for heating for October 2023 was £102, (including standing charge on the meter) my electricity cost to run my heat pump for October 24 was a mere £20, that’s an 80% reduction in my heating costs.   My gas meter has now been removed saving me around £100/yr in standing charges.  I’m confident that my switch from a gas boiler to a heat pump will greatly reduce both my energy costs and my carbon footprint.
