Mitsubishi air source heat pump in a 1945 - 1964 property

Simon

I'm a mostly retired entrepreneur, with a physics, technology and healthcare background. I became concerned about the environment 40 years ago, leading to our first solar panels in 2011, when they were still expensive. The rest has followed since then. I've been active in encouraging people to do the same, with some success. I helped form the Ferriby Sustainability Forum, speak at events and am looking at a establishing a community energy organisation.

Installing the system

Our house was built in 1947 as a council house. Luckily it has cavity walls. We have extended it several times, so only 40% of the outside walls are still outside 😳
We have substantially improved the insulation throughout the property.
We upgraded a couple of radiators to attractive, high output designer radiators, but the rest are as they were.

The heat pump installation was back in 2019. As I recall it took about 3 days. We have no appropriate ground floor space, so the pump is on our first floor en-suite wall.

We have subsequently boxed in and insulated the long pipe run from the pump to the gubbins in the house. That improved the overall SCOP a few points to just under 4.

Living with a heat pump

It took us a year to learn not to use the pump like a combi-boiler. Once we realised we changed to keeping the house at a much more steady temperature and it's all controlled via a Hive smart controller.

When the weather is down to 0°C the heat pump peaks at about 5kW consumption and we can hear it, but it's not intrusive.

Visiting my heat pump: We are all in on sustainable energy, so feel free to ask about our 2 solar arrays, heat pump, batteries and EV, and how they all work together.

Message Simon if you want to ask them something about their heat pump or the process of getting one installed. Click request a visit above if you want to arrange a visit.

Accessing the venue

We are mostly around, so book to come any time. If you come by EV you can plug in while you are here.
