I am the director of Kraken Plumbing & Heating Limited, I had been fitting heat pumps for afew years before I decided to fit one in my own house, I thought it was no good me telling people how to run and how heat pumps felt when I had no actual real life experience of living with one myself. My Mrs is happy as the house is lovely temp 24/7 with minimal interference as the heat pump works with weather compensation, it looks after itself. It’s great for me as it’s my test rig, to swap and change and add bits on, take bits off, to see how it affects performance, so I can give customer real life feedback of what materials are best to help them achieve the highest efficiency’s there system would be capable of.

Installing the system

I am a heat geek elite heat pump installer and system designer, who has installed a heat pump in my own home, running through two winters now,
Albeit abit of a test rig where I test new types of insulation, add bits on and take bits off to see how it affects system performance.

My property is a 1950’s semi detached property, I have added cavity wall insulation,
Upgraded my loft insulation to 300mm and updated most of the windows..

Most installs take around 8 days (to do to a high standard) depending on the house size.

Usually most radiators will need replacing or repurposing in other rooms as flow temperatures are much lower.

You will need somewhere for a cylinder to go, or there are ‘ministore’ cylinders available that will fit into a kitchen cupboard.

Contrary to belief, System pipework is usually fine to remain how it is and only pipework from the heat pump to the cylinder cupboard needs upgrading.

System is running with only radiators.

Living with a heat pump

As the system has been designed well, achieving scops over 4.
Running prices are cheaper than my old Worcester 24CDI boiler, currently on a OVO 15p per kWh electricity tariff which drastically cuts running costs too.

The feel of the house is so much more comfortable, as it’s a lovely even heat, people constantly comment how lovely the house feels when they come in, 2 years since install!!
No hot or cold spots, no overheating or under heating.
All whilst drastically reducing my point of use carbon foot print.
