Octopus air source heat pump in a post 2003 property

Peter

We are a working married couple with busy jobs. When our gas boiler was condemned early in 2024, we wanted to get rid of gas, move to a heat pump, get solar and battery to get some level of energy independence before we retire. We've heard so much negative comment about heat pumps, even from family and friends who've visited, that we just want to show people how well they do work and how cost effective they are. The heat pump was a no brainer for us and we're happy to share our experience with others.

Installing the system

From the initial contact with Octopus, through the quote, survey's, wait time, installation and post installation, the process has been very smooth.

We wanted a Cosy 6 as it was Octopus's own brand pump, so we had to wait until it was launched (we were offered a Daikin first).

We had 3 surveys as the early rules on where we could site the heat pump were quite strict regarding the refrigerant and planning as I wanted it within 1m of our boundary.  Conditions that are changing now.

We got on the waiting list for the Cosy 6, had to wait for it to be launched and then a holiday got in the way, so our project time was much longer than most will experience.

The install was 5 days and went perfectly.

7 of our 9 main radiators were changed, but it was all in done quickly and smoothly, there was no remedial work and you'd be hard pressed to notice the difference.

Most of the visible work was done in the airing cupboard and utility room.  Plus a run down the outside of the house to the heat pump itself.

The installers were brilliant, friendly, courteous, clean, tidy etc etc.

Living with a heat pump

The Cosy 6 has exceeded our expectations, we're lovely and toasty, the house is warm and the water is hot!

The radiators don't get as hot as with a gas boiler, so much safer for small children and elderly relatives.

The cost to run the heat pump is similar to the gas boiler on a standard tariff, but we now have solar and battery from Octopus, so the cost is much, much less than gas.
