Mitsubishi air source heat pump in a 1945 - 1964 property

Alex

About me
I've had a target to become a low carbon household for a while. We have solar pv, thermal and a battery. The heat pump was the last piece of the puzzle. The gas has now been disconnected and we're better off financially. I've chosen to monitor my heat pump with a heat meter so I have a really good understanding of how it operates. Installing it myself I've learnt an incredible amount which I'd love to share with others.

Visiting my heat pump

Air source heat pump

Installed by Self installed

EPC rating: B

Cost of energy bills per year: £1000

Installing the system

The installation was quite straightforward. I chose to add three additional radiators but because of the location of the unit there was minimal upheaval. We already had solar thermal which meant we had a suitable existing cylinder. Doing it myself it probably took around 10 days in total including the radiators. But the majority of this work was in the cylinder cupboard and outside so not too impactful on the rest of the house.

Living with a heat pump

We love the improved ambient temperature in the house. There's no yoyo between hot and cold. Together with our solar panels and a good tariff, it looks like the heat pump is providing significant savings.
