Samsung air source heat pump in a 1920 - 1944 property

David

We decided to install a heat pump primarily on environmental grounds. Lots of research followed before we started. I have shared my research and experiences with friends who are considering a heat pump. I am happy to widen that sharing with others.

Installed by Evergreen Energy

Installing the system

Evergreen Energy based near Manchester installed our air source heat pump. The job spread over a few weeks. The various trades involved were travelling from Liverpool, Manchester and other cities, sometimes not staying overnight. If Evergreen had a depot near Newcastle I'm sure the whole process would have taken about half the time. We also did not have the same person completing each stage of the work, so our requests would have to be passed on to whoever turned up each day.
Having said that, the workmanship was on the whole ok and Evergreen staff would always achieve our requests about where pipes were to run etc.

Living with a heat pump

As part of the design, some of the radiators needed to be changed to larger ones. The existing radiator pipework used 10mm diameter pipes. I was told to change this to 15mm diameter. The heat pump worked well with these changes. I found like many others, that a heat pump works most effectively if it is left on for 24hrs during the whole of the winter months. I initially tried to turn it down at night and when I was out of the house, but running it for long hours at lower temperatures was the cheapest way.
